Good Belly Yoga

We live in a world obsessed with fat, and yet fat is essential to health and hormones. Your fat is actually an organ just as much as your heart and gut.

Even though fat is everywhere all over your body, and is just as important as your stomach, heart, liver, and brain because it makes the hormones that manage your homeostatic functions i.e. appetite and energy. That is what brings balance into your life.

I came upon this understanding after reading the Secret Life of Fat by Sylvia Tara PhD who has made it her life’s work to study fat metabolism.

My background is in biology also, andI was delighted to read this book so I could understand how hormones were affecting my body– making it too fat, too thin, and sometimes really lumpy!

I’ve experimented with a lot of diets and finally found the one for me, and it includes a lot of fresh food and supplements.

Older and wiser

I am 73 now, and my path through life turned out a little bit different than what I had planned: which was to become a doctor. Instead of becoming a doctor, I got a degree in naturopathy, couldn’t make a living so I became a dancer, massage therapist, and yoga teacher. I am still focused on making people healthier through yoga and understanding the human body better, especially my own.

Naturopathy was a good decision based on my body. Although I was physically strong, my body kept breaking down when I pushed it too hard to get the grades, be a hard worker, carry an overload, work physically demanding jobs to help pay my way through college.

My lifelong occupations (massage and yoga) demand a lot of my physical and mental fitness but I loved my work. It helped me understand humans and their bodies better.

While studying the exercises best for my body, and the diet that nourished it I found myself healthier and more energetic and at peace with myself when I started to manage my own health with yoga and good food.

This is the thing: there is always a caveat. I am an individual and everybody has to find their own way to balance.

If you care about it, you will find it, because you persist in finding your journey to health.
